angry angels

The series Angry Angels began in our apartment in Nazaré, Portugal, as the Israeli–Gaza conflict intensified. One day, I saw a young man sitting by the roadside, singing about angels, and suddenly I could see them—tired, defiant angels trying to make sense of it all.

I painted the first angel heads on canvas with acrylics I had carried with me on our travels. Back in the States, I mounted them onto cradle boards and expanded the images, allowing the angels to grow beyond their original forms.

“I was pulled in by the visual playfulness of this piece but was equally interested by potential darkness of the text and head. 'Just Stop it Please' can possess deeply negative connotations and the dark, reclined head lends itself even more to something coming to an end. Serious subject matter coupled with playful visual elements in my opinion is always a good match.”
